The small city of Bend, Oregon doesn’t pop up when you Google “Best Adventure Destination in the U.S.”, but it deserves that denotation. With a local volcanic monument, stunning natural scenery and an abounding culinary scene, this location has it all. Let Bend host your next getaway!
Where to Stay
While visiting Bend, be sure to split your time between the Downtown District and the Old Mill District. Both have access to restaurants, curated shops and spectacular views. The Oxford Hotel is located downtown and has all the offerings you could hope for. Complimentary amenities, upscale dining options, and a monthly Jazz at the Oxford series make it a solid choice.
The Riverhouse is a few minutes away from downtown, but it is just as in-the-moment. The hotel has riverview rooms available, meaning you can wake up and immediately enjoy the breathtaking views of the Deschutes River. The Riverhouse has a robust lineup of events, too.
The Campfire Hotel has a different feel; it’s for the adventurous group. This motor-lodge style hotel has been updated and transformed into a stylish place for community. Rooms surround a year-round pool and hot tub, so schedule in downtime accordingly.
What to Do
This spot in Oregon has so many inviting attractions, you’ll have a hard time picking which to do first. The Lava Tube Cave Tour with Wanderlust Tours is a solid choice. As the only guide company permitted for tours in the lava caves, this special access attraction is authentic and rugged. Tours require navigation of rocky terrain and crawling without lighting or paved paths.
Since the Deschutes River flows through Bend, tubing is a relaxing option for sight-seeing. Do this before drying off and exploring the rest of the Old Mill District, which includes a premier shopping center for all of your souvenir needs. Additionally, the last remaining Blockbuster is located in Bend. While you may not need to rent a DVD, the nostalgia is worth it.
Lastly, you can’t visit Bend without making the drive to the highlights of Deschutes National Forest. Fall River is a serene spot for spending an afternoon fly fishing, or exploring the waterfront. Sparks Lake is also nearby and is the perfect place to paddle board. Wrap up your day with a Sunset Dinner. This unique dining experience requires a journey up Mt. Bachelor via ski lift, as well as reservations in advance, but the experience is well worth the trouble!
What to Eat
Speaking of dinner, make note of these Bend favorites. Pine Tavern is just what it sounds like – a tavern built around a giant Ponderosa pine tree. The restaurant sits on the Deschutes River and has a rich history, exhibited by its menu. For a different speed, Spork is a counter service restaurant that blends Mexican and Asian dishes.
The Commons is a great way to start your day, with a perfect location, fresh, locally-sourced coffee, and local pastries. From there, you can walk along the Deschutes River trail right to the Old Mill District. When it’s time for lunch, keep the Italian restaurant BOSA Food & Drink in mind. This spot is known for delicious housemade focaccia, grilled calamari, and an assortment of desserts.
What to Drink
For a truly unique brewery experience, head to the HOPServatory at Worthy Brewing. Besides the selection of flagship beers and seasonal brews, Worthy Brewing has an observatory on sight. Here, visitors can view the night sky through a 16-inch, research-grade telescope. The attraction is first come, first served Thursday through Saturday.
Crux Fermentation Project is another local treasure. This brewer-owned and operated brewery is all about experimenting to perfection. With a live music calendar and rotating list of beers on tap, the tap room is described as a craft beer playground and is definitely worth your while.
