Highlands, NC

Highlands, NC

Highlands, North Carolina is the perfect destination for a fall getaway. Nestled between mountains and close to both Georgia and South Carolina, the town is quaint yet brimming with vibrant spaces and plenty of personality.

 Where to Stay

A trip to Highlands is all about indulging in each place you visit, starting with where you wake up. The Highlander Mountain House has a perfect location in the heart of town and is full of eclectic charm. The hotel offers complimentary bicycle, fly-rod and Wellie rentals for any exploration you desire. During your stay, enjoy a full day of adventure and return early for dinner at the highly rated Ruffed Grouse Tavern.

If you’d prefer a stay further into the Carolina High Country, make your reservation for the High Hampton Resort. It combines all of the best aspects of a resort experience, with inn rooms and cottages available depending on your preference. The property features a central lake, excellent dining options, court and lawn sports, and an 18-hole golf course.

What to Eat

As for food, the main street in downtown Highlands is a great place for lunch or dinner. Mountain Fresh Grocery may seem an unlikely choice, but experienced visitors know it’s a great spot for all kinds of food, including pizza, sandwiches and daily chef specials.

If you’re near On the Side BBQ, make sure to stop by. This spot is a great value and serves impressive barbeque, Cuban and French-dip sandwiches. Even better, it's located in a farmers market with goodies you can save for later.

For those who prefer formal dining, Madison’s Restaurant has an impressive menu that incorporates garden-fresh food from local farmers and purveyors. Book your reservation in advance, and don’t wait to start thinking about what to order. Consider the Blood Orange Maple-Glazed Duck Breast or the Bacon-Wrapped Sunburst Trout, as well as one of their Southern sides.

What to Drink

Whiteside Brewing Co is located across the street from On the Side BBQ, making them the perfect afternoon duo. The brewpub has a great selection of indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a full calendar of events. Their beer list is updated often and there are house cocktails and ciders available as well.

Another great spot for a drink is the Old Edwards Inn Wine Garden. Get a table outside and enjoy a glass from their expansive wine list, or pick from their locally sourced craft beers. Enjoy light fare, a patio-side waterfall and relaxing ambiance on a fall afternoon.

What to Do

Your trip may be complete with all of the food, drinks and amenities above, but if you have the desire, Highlands has even more to offer. Whiteside Mountain is the perfect recreational hike for the active visitor at 1.9 miles. The trail loops along the Eastern Continental Divide, presenting beautiful views to the east, north and south.

Exploring the Nantahala Temperate Rainforest is possible on a Rainforest Tour, where guests learn history of the area aboard a Pinzgauer, capable of all-terrain action. This adventurous experience is great for photographing the breathtaking views and visiting local waterfalls.

Once you have completed your time in the mountains, journey back to town for a walk down the main street. Calders Coffee Café has delicious lattes and smoothies. Plus, it’s close to a collection of shops, and Shakespeare and Company BookSellers.

Last, take a look at the concert lineup at the Farm at Old Edwards before choosing your trip dates. This live concert series is set in the Orchard, an enchanting venue for an evening of music whether you are staying on the property or just visiting for the evening.
